The idea in this piece is to use a fast light bow very near the bridge, with almost no downwards pressure, with the aim of bringing out the high harmonics of the notes. (Knox)
Knox Spaces #1 (Beside the bridge) Approximate grade: RCM ARCT / ASTA 6+ / ABRSM 8+ Atonal. Fast and light. Metronome: Quarter note = 132
Irising: Start the note a little more "normally" (but quietly) then doing the cresc entirely with bow speed moving in towards the bridge with a very fast light bow searching to split the note and to reveal some of the spectrum of harmonics hidden inside it. (Knox)

Crossing the line between measured and unmeasured is one of the main concerns of this study. Accents on unmeasured tremolo are an aid to the gesture of throwing the hand and leaving it relaxed. (Knox)
The tremolo should move over the strings in a kind of upwards and downwards arpeggio movement. This section is a good preparation for Berio's Sequenza VI. (Knox)
The stroke starts by throwing the bow as in ricochet then immediately picking up and continuing the bounce with an oscillating tremolo over two strings. (Knox)
Knox Spaces #6 (Harmonic horizon) Approximate grade: RCM ARCT / ASTA 6+ / ABRSM 8+ Atonal. Slow, very free. Metronome: Quarter note markings range from 40 to 120.
'Brushing.' Move the bow along the length of the string going from ponticello to tasto and back (with no sideways pull), giving a 'wiping' sound (very little pitch). Much used by Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino. (Knox)
Like spazzolato but incorporating a sideways pull (like a normal bowing) giving a circular movement to the bow and producing small accents, a little like a helicopter. (Knox)
Helicopter effect: Combination of spazzolato and circular bowing, at the heel of the bow. The bow could be held almost in the fist of the hand, to get extra pressure and weight (and lots of bow noise!). (Knox)
